Attimo Winery Visit 4/13

What better way to spend a Friday afternoon than visiting a local winery with my roommates?  My roommates and I made the short drive to a winery in Christiansburg and enjoyed the lovely atmosphere.  We chatted with the owner, and sampled a selection of wines vined from 100% Virginia-grown grapes.

Attimo means "in the moment".  I certainly was able to enjoy myself in the moment during our seated wine tasting.  The tasting room had nice decor, and a view overlooking the vineyard.  It was a beautiful day outside, and I was really able to enjoy the experience, and take my mind off of my busy schedule.

Eight wines were offered during the tasting.

The inside of the tasting room

Sonnet 98 (2010)- Vidal Blanc
13% Alcohol
$17
Attimo Winery notes- dry, crisp, floral, hints of fresh greens

My notes: This wine is the most popular white wine offered at Attimo and has won several awards such as Double Gold: International Eastern Wine Competition.  It was off dry with .5% residual sugar.  It had floral notes on the nose, and was crisp and very enjoyable.  It was my favorite wine of the tasting.

I do (2010)- Traminette and Petit Manseng grapes
13% Alcohol
$17
Attimo Winery notes- semi-sweet, distinct citrus notes

My notes: This wine had a floral bouquet.  It was semi-sweet, with 2.5% residual sugar.  The sweetness was not overpowering.  I detected notes of apple.  This wine would do well with spicy food.

Deep Silence (2010)- Cabernet Franc
13% Alcohol
$18
Attimo Winery notes- This is a Bordeaux style wine, aged in American oak for nine months.  Dry red, intense berry flavors and light smoky pepper finish.

My notes: This wine had distinct black pepper notes on the aroma, as well as in the taste.  I also detected cherry undertones.  It was aged in American oak for 9 months.  It had rounded tannins.

AD 325 (2010)- Chambourcin
13.8% Alcohol
$16
Attimo Winery notes- This is an Old World style wine that is aged in a mixture of clay and concrete.  Dry red with bold flavors and cherry undertones.

My notes: This old world wine was deep purple in color.  It was aged in clay and concrete for an earthy finish.  It had flavors of black currant.  This wine was fruit forward, with spice at the end.  This is one of the most popular wines at the winery, and won several awards.

Sudden Downpour (year not provided)- Apple/White Blend
12.5% alcohol
$13/ 375 ml        $18/750ml
Attimo Winery Notes- This wine is aged in bourbon barrels.  Sweet, apple wine with bourbon notes and earthy tones.

My notes: This wine had a sweet aroma that smelled strongly of apples.  It had a creamy taste, with notes of caramel. It was aged with bourbon barrel chips.  When ordered, it comes served in a caramel rimmed glass, which I think is appropriate given the taste of the wine.

Masquerade (2010)- Chardonnay
12.5% Alcohol
$19
Attimo Winery notes- This wine is named Masquerade because it is masked in oak.  Dry, smooth and oakey.
My notes: This wine had citrus flavors on the nose and on the palate, as well as hints of vanilla.  It was masked in oak, so it also had oakey notes in the taste.

Vertex (2010)- Cabernet Sauvignon
13% Alcohol
$20
Attimo Winery notes- This wine is aged in French oak for 11 months.  Dry red, rich with black currant flavors and French oak notes.

My notes: This wine was ruby red, with a slight purple hue.  It smelled of bright red fruits, and was the most tannic wine of the tasting.  It was very smooth on the palate.

Seduction (2010)- Tinta Madera, Tourigo Nacional, and Souzao grapes
18% Alcohol
$26
Attimo Winery notes- Sweet, vintage ruby port.  Direct from Portugal, hints of raspberry and raisins.

My notes: This wine was a deep red/purple in color.  It was aged at the winery for 18 months.  This wine tasted strongly of black liquorice.  It was slightly syrupy, and a bit musky.  It had 7.5% sugar, and the sweetness carried through in the taste.

Some of the literature I collected from the visit

Overall, I had a very nice visit to the winery.  I hope to return in the future for some of their wine festivals and special events.
